Quebec’s Eastern Townships say the region is a perfect getaway for those who want to step back from the bright lights of the big city during part of their Quebec vacations but at the same time don’t want to step back too far.
Shanny Halle, spokesperson for Tourism Eastern Townships, says being a little east of Montreal serves the Eastern Townships particularly well.
“The Eastern Townships have developed a strong identity of their own and continue to gain recognition among both Canadian and international travellers,” Halle states. “While Montréal and Québec City are often the first destinations visitors think of (when planning a Quebec vacation) the Eastern Townships offer a complementary experience that is easy to reach yet feels completely different.
“Our proximity to Montréal is actually one of our greatest strengths. Visitors can easily combine the energy of a major city with a slower-paced getaway centred on nature, local food, charming villages and authentic experiences. In recent years, we’ve also seen growing media attention and increased interest from international markets, confirming that the region is becoming a destination in its own right.

Halle says that the Eastern Townships can host people year-round, with activities differing, depending on the time of year.
“Each season offers a distinct experience,” she continues.” Summer is known for cycling, lakes, hiking, agritourism, wineries, local food and vibrant villages. Fall attracts visitors with spectacular foliage, harvest season and gourmet experiences. Winter transforms the region into one of Québec’s premier outdoor destinations, with skiing, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, spas and cozy accommodations.

Halle notes the Eastern Townships begin less than an hour from Montréal, making the region an ideal day trip or weekend getaway. Visitors can drive directly to the region using major highways, and many choose to extend their Montréal vacation with a few days exploring the Townships’ countryside, villages, vineyards and outdoor attractions.
“Summer remains our busiest tourism season, driven by outdoor activities, cycling, lakes, festivals and agritourism,” she reports. “Fall is also extremely popular, thanks to the spectacular autumn colours and harvest season.
“That said, one of our strategic priorities is to strengthen our four-season appeal. Winter is a major season thanks to skiing and other outdoor activities, while we continue to develop experiences that encourage visitors to discover the region throughout the year.”
Halle says that vacationers can choose from a multitude of experiences, regardless of their interests.
“The Eastern Townships are known for combining nature with local flavours,” Halle adds. “Visitors can cycle the Véloroute Gourmande, explore one of Québec’s oldest wine regions, discover cideries and microbreweries, stay in unique accommodations, paddle on beautiful lakes, relax in Nordic spas or visit charming villages rich in history and character.”
Halle also praises the Eastern Townships’ distinctive heritage, influenced by Loyalist, American, British and French-Canadian cultures, “creating an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Québec.”
