WestJet Unveils Winter Expansion with Record Capacity to Sun Destinations
WestJet is expanding its 2026/2027 winter schedule, emphasizing Latin American and Caribbean travel with a 12% capacity increase.
Significant growth targets Western Canadian hubs: Calgary sees 18% growth and new non-stop flights to Mérida, Winnipeg grows by 26% with new Belize and Punta Cana services, and Regina experiences 64% growth with its first non-stop Los Cabos connection.
Additionally, WestJet is launching its first direct Western Canada-to-South America route, connecting Calgary to São Paulo.
American Airlines announces fleet-wide upgrades
American Airlines has announced a comprehensive transformation of its narrowbody fleet. The airline will install 4K seatback entertainment screens across all new and retrofitted narrowbody aircraft, beginning in 2028. Additionally, premium seating capacity will increase from 25% to 40% in the coming years, offering more First Class and Main Cabin Extra options.
These updates accompany broader investments, including Starlink high-speed Wi-Fi launching in 2027, expanded Flagship and Admirals Club lounges, upgraded dining menus, and improved mobile technology.
WestJet completes major milestone in inflight experience transformation
WestJet has completed upgrading its former Swoop and Sunwing all-economy aircraft, introducing refreshed Premium, Extended Comfort, and Economy cabins. These reconfigured jets now offer improved amenities, including fast, free Wi-Fi, four-way adjustable headrests, device holders, modern charging ports, and coat hooks.
Additionally, WestJet recently restored the legroom in its Boeing 737 aircraft that briefly operated with 180 seats. The retrofit project was originally planned to be completed this fall; however, WestJet wrapped up the project part-way through June. All previously affected aircraft are now flying with 174 seats, a refreshed interior and enhanced amenities, including WestJet Wi-Fi.
Starting this September, the airline will also begin refurbishing its narrowbody fleet, with completion targetted for late 2027.
Lufthansa takes off with Starlink high-speed internet
Lufthansa has launched high-speed in-flight Wi-Fi powered by Starlink. The first equipped Airbus A320neo completed its inaugural flight from Frankfurt to Rome on Aug. 19. The technology offers reliable speeds exceeding standard home or office connections.
Lufthansa plans to outfit up to ten more A320-family aircraft by the end of 2026, with the target to equip approximately 850 aircraft across the Lufthansa Group by 2029.
Air Canada intends to launch service to Lagos in 2027
Air Canada is welcoming the Government of Canada’s announcement of an expanded Air Transport Agreement between Canada and Nigeria. The airline intends to launch scheduled service to Lagos in 2027 and is starting the process to obtaining the necessary government approvals to operate commercial flights to Nigeria.
Details including schedules and aircraft will be announced in due course and remains subject to receipt of government approval and completion of applicable processes to operate in Nigeria.
