Resort is all about 'serenity,' sales director says
The sales director at a Mexican Pacific coast resort says her property is ideally suited for those who want to be far from the madding crowd. Elena Atristain of the Cala de Mar Ixtapa says the resort will be appreciated by those who enjoy quiet vacations, rather than raucous bars.
“Cala de Mar is designed for travellers who appreciate privacy, tranquility and personalized service,” Atristain says. “Each suite features its own private plunge pool overlooking the Pacific Ocean, creating a sanctuary where guests can disconnect from the world and reconnect with themselves. It’s not about nightlife and crowds — it’s about serenity, stunning sunsets, and meaningful experiences.”
Notably, she points out that every aspect of the property has been curated to foster calm and well-being, “from our cliffside spa inspired by local healing traditions, to yoga classes and meditation areas, and private terraces where guests can enjoy an uninterrupted view of the ocean. Our team anticipates every need with warm, intuitive service, so guests can truly let go and immerse themselves in a sense of peace.”
Cala de Mar Resort & Spa Ixtapa notes it was included in the 2025 MICHELIN Guide for Hotels, having earned the “prestigious distinction of One MICHELIN Key” in recognition of its hospitality. The list of Mexico’s top-rated hotels highlights Cala de Mar as a “serene and elegant seaside retreat” that is perched on a cliffside with 59 oceanview suites, offering guests a “tranquil escape immersed in natural beauty.”
The MICHELIN Guide selects hotels through anonymous visits by inspectors who evaluate each property based on universal standards of excellence – architecture and design, quality of service, character, and value for the price. Out of over 5,000 hotels reviewed worldwide, only those “offering truly memorable stays are awarded a MICHELIN Key. Similar to the Guide’s globally renowned star system for restaurants, this new hotel distinction ranges from one to three keys. Each key signals a verified level of excellence, offering travelers a trusted symbol of hospitality at its finest.”
Cala de Mar has five-star culinary offerings in four signature restaurants. Las Rocas Restaurant serves “simple, creative dishes in a relaxed poolside atmosphere,” while Seafood Market is known for seafood served in a cozy, locally inspired setting. At the heart of the resort, A Mares Restaurant features the executive chef’s original creations paired with premier Mexican and international wines. At the same time, the A Mares Terrace Bar offers tapas and snacks with “breathtaking sunset views over the ocean. This comprehensive culinary experience — including 24-hour in-room dining — played a key role in the resort’s recognition by MICHELIN.”
Cala de Mar is also home to El Capricho Spa, which blends ancient Aztec healing traditions with modern luxury. Steps from the ocean, the spa is described as “a true sanctuary for the senses,” where the citrus scent of toronjil, a flower native to the state of Guerrero, greets guests upon arrival. The spa menu features signature treatments using regional ingredients such as cacao, coffee, aloe, and cactus, alongside reflexology, body scrubs, and hydrotherapy. Amenities like a jacuzzi, steam room, and sauna “round out a deeply restorative experience designed to nourish body and soul.”
Many Cala de Mar guests begin the day with yoga by the ocean or breakfast on their private terrace, Atristain reports. As well, some venture into town for cultural experiences, such as visiting local artisans or exploring nearby beaches.
However, others prefer to stay within the resort, enjoying the likes of spa treatments, a cooking class, cycling along the scenic bike path, or simply reading by the pool. “Evenings often end with a romantic dinner under the stars or a private tequila tasting,” Atristain adds.
Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo doesn’t see the same number of visitors as the likes of Cancun or the Riviera Maya but Atristain says “travelers who value authenticity, natural beauty, and a slower pace of life will fall in love with Ixtapa–Zihuatanejo. It’s a destination that combines the comfort of a modern resort area with the charm of a traditional fishing village. Visitors often tell us they come for the ocean views and stay for the warmth of the people and the genuine sense of place.
“We’re seeing growing interest from Canadian travelers who are looking for something different — a luxury experience that feels more intimate and less commercial than other Mexican destinations. With new air connections and increased media attention, Ixtapa–Zihuatanejo is becoming a hidden gem for Canadians seeking sunshine, wellness, and exclusivity at accessible rates during the winter season.”
Meanwhile, Atristain says her property is determined to ensure guests enjoy their stays.
“Cala de Mar is more than a resort — it’s a deeply personal experience where we make every guest feel embraced and cared for by our people, surrounded by the property’s refined luxury and stunning architecture,” she continues. “We invite guests to slow down, savor the beauty of the Pacific coast, and rediscover what it means to truly unwind. Every stay is tailored to each guest, making every visit uniquely memorable.”
