Moby Dick author Melville wrote while in the city
Mazatlan’s Pueblo Bonito Vantage is clearly happy to inform guests that one of history’s famed seafaring sorts who gained acclaim as an author spent time in the coastal city.
Guillermo Miranda of the parent company Pueblo Bonito Resorts notes that Herman Meliville, who spent much of his time at sea and wrote among other things the classic novel Moby Dick, continued to work on his literary efforts while in Mazatlan, a city in which he spent considerable time.
“When he was here, he wrote every day,” Miranda reports. “It’s a good selling point (for the hotel).”
Pueblo Bonito Resorts has three Mazatlan properties, two of them beachfront all-inclusives and the other – the Pueblo Bonito Vantage – a European Plan property found in Mazatlan’s historic quarter.
Pueblo Bonito also has a hotel in Los Cabos and is opening another in the interior city of San Miguel de Allende.
The Pueblo Bonito Vantage proudly recalls Melville’s time in Mazatlan, among other things naming its restaurant The Melville and having a portrait of the novelist in its meeting room. As well, a plaque on the building exterior quotes the author.
The Pueblo Bonito Vantage, three blocks from the ocean, is found in a building that dates back around 200 years, and Miranda reports that it and other structures in Mazatlan’s old quarter must keep their facades, preserving the district’s character.
Mexican architectural influences will be seen, including an interior courtyard. The 24-room hotel has a spa.
“It’s a small property but it has all the services,” Miranda states. “This is like a high-class boutique hotel.”
Meanwhile, Miranda says Mazatlan has an appealing combination of attractions for visitors. “We have the beach, the history and the culture,” with the city’s annual carnival reportedly one of the three largest in the world.
Karla Padilla of Sinaloa’s tourism board in turn says Mazatlan provides “the best of both worlds,” adding visitors can experience “breath-taking” sunsets.
