Desert, sea and mountains await visiting tourists

Moroccan tour company Attendance DMC Morocco has what’s arguably Morocco’s most exotic locale as its backyard, with it being based in the interior city of Marrakech, founded in 1062 and one of Morocco’s storied Imperial Cities.

And, Attendance DMC Morocco’s Mounir Akajia said during a recent webinar, the city is all-important to Moroccan tourism.

“Marrakech remains the heart of international tourism in Morocco,” Akajia said of the city, the old quarter of which is home to the likes of Jema El Fnaa Square, where the likes of jugglers, fortune tellers, musicians, snake charmers and others perform nightly in front of onlooking tourists. The square, which dates back to Marrakech’s origins and was once a meeting point for traders, has UNESCO World Heritage Site status.

The city’s medina or old quarter has long attracted celebrities, among them Winston Churchill, who after retiring used to visit Marrakech regularly to paint.

Akajia told viewers that his homeland is diverse topographically, having a long coast, the lofty Atlas Mountains and desert landscapes.

But often intriguing landscapes are only one side to the country, he continued.

“Morocco is a culturally rich country because it has been ruled by several dynasties and civilizations, so it’s a mixture of African, Arab, Berber and we also have some European influences… This allows us to get something that is unique.”

Attendance DMC Morocco has numerous opportunities for clients to become acquainted with Moroccans and Moroccan lifestyles, among other things enabling them to help bake bread in Berber communities in the Atlas Mountains.

Other options include visiting pottery workshops in Fez and viewing wood-carving demonstrations in Marrakech.

As well, Attendance DMC Morocco clients can participate in a mint tea ceremony with a Berber family in the Atlas Mountains, with distinctive mint tea being hugely popular in North Africa.

Akajia said those touring Morocco with his company can stay in riads, traditional homes converted into hotels that provide a distinctively Moroccan experience.

Attendance DMC Morocco was founded in 2018 by two individuals who collectively have over 40 years experience in Moroccan tourism, and works with group, FIT and the MICE markets. Set itineraries offering such cities as Rabat, Casablanca, Fez and Marrakech are available.

The company also works with those disembarking from cruise ships calling at Tangiers, Casablanca and Agadir. Arabic, French and Berber are the most commonly spoken languages in Morocco but Attendance DMC Morocco offers English-speaking guides.
