Tour operator holds its annual Toronto-area gathering
Cuba specialist Hola Sun Holidays used its annual Toronto-area travel agents’ evening to update agents on what awaits their Cuba-bound clients this winter and also show appreciation to a man who has spent the past several years energetically promoting the destination to Canadians.
Hola Sun general manager Hugo Rocha says the Oct. 3 event drew representation from such major Cuban hotel chains as Blue Diamond, Gaviota, Iberostar, and Blau Hotels. But he added the evening wasn’t all work, no play.
“It was highlighted by live music and dance performances,” he reported. “Attendees also had the opportunity to practice the Cuban rhythm steps they had learned over the years.”
Tourism authorities are quick to note that Cuban music and dancing have earned a worldwide following.
Rocha also noted that the evening saw a tribute to Lessner Gomez, director of the Cuba Tourism Board’s Toronto office on the eve of his return to his homeland after years of carrying the flag for Cuban tourism in this country.
“Hola Sun expressed its gratitude for Lessner Gomez’s dedicated efforts, enthusiasm, and hard work in promoting Cuba as a travel destination,” he added. “We wish him all the best in his new assignment.”
Hola Sun is touting its new rewards program, COLLECTION PLUS, which offers exclusive added values at select hotels, including complimentary massages, in-room beach towels, private check-in, and more.
The tour operator has also announced the expansion of its air operations with a new direct Toronto–Havana flight with WestJet, starting Jan. 8.
As well, it confirmed that all airlines it partners with will continue to include one free carry-on and one free checked bag.
Hola Sun paid tribute to Lessner Gomez ahead of his return to Cuba after six years as the director of the Cuba Tourism Board’s Toronto office.
In addition, Hola Sun has introduced new group travel incentives, such as higher commissions for group reservations, a reduced deposit from $250 to $150 per person, double loyalty points for group bookings, and more.
Rocha said the number of tourists traveling to Cuba is on the rise. “We are confident that sales for the upcoming winter season will reach levels close to those of winter 2019–2020.”
This year has shown better results for the tour operator than 2024 and 2023, with Rocha saying Cuba has solidly established itself in the Canadian market.
“Cuba has long been a preferred destination for Canadians, thanks to its warm weather, beautiful beaches, and natural surroundings,” he continued. “More importantly, over the years Canadians have come to deeply appreciate Cuban hospitality and culture. Visitors often highlight the warmth and friendliness of the Cuban people, as well as their love for music, dance, history, and culture in general.”
Rocha also added that Cayo Cruz and Cayo Paredon are “experiencing strong sales for obvious reasons — they are the newest destinations on the island, and travellers are eager to discover them. These destinations offer a wide range of hotels and services at affordable prices, along with stunning natural beauty that invites visitors to explore and enjoy. We believe Cuba will continue to be a popular destination for Canadian travellers. Next year, we will proudly celebrate 35 years in the industry. Achieving our mission would not be possible without the support of our industry partners, especially the travel agents who have remained loyal to us throughout the years.”
