Flair prepares to begin Mexico City service, marking the the fourth Mexican city in Flair's network

Flair Airlines is on the eve of providing airborne links between both Vancouver and Toronto and Mexico City, confident that there are plenty of Canadians eager to see a side of Mexico that doesn’t front ocean water.

Vancouver-Mexico City service starts Oct. 27, while service between Toronto and the Mexican capital begins on Oct. 28. There will be three weekly flights from both Canadian cities.

“We’re making Mexico City affordable and attainable for everyone,” airline spokeswoman Kim Bowie told a recent Toronto event. “We love Mexico.”

Mexico City is the fourth Mexican city in Flair’s network, with the airline already offering Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta and Cancun. Air Canada and Aeromexico also link Mexico City with this country but Bowie said Flair’s structure enables it to undercut fares offered by other airlines, with one-way Vancouver-Mexico City and Toronto-Mexico City airfares possibly being available for $120, depending on a number of factors.

Mexico City is the second inland Mexican destination offered by the airline, with Canadians vacationing in Mexico traditionally overwhelmingly opting for coastal stays. But Bowie said the Mexican capital is a “bucket list” destination for many, while her colleague Duncan Pattillo described it as a “thriving hub” of Mexican culture and cuisine.

The airline distributed brochures at the Toronto event listing some of Mexico City’s historical and culinary attractions. Guadalajara was promoted as a destination that isn’t beachfront but is building a following in this country. Pattillo in turn labelled Mexico City “beautiful” and added Flair expects two-way traffic on its upcoming routes, carrying Mexicans north as well.

Pattillo said Flair may continue operating the Mexico City routes after winter if demand warrants it.

Flair notes that it’s broadening its network, which now includes points across Canada and in the United States, Mexico and the Caribbean. The airline now has 20 Boeing 737s in its fleet.
