RIU's first Canadian urban hotel opened successfully with 93% occupancy

Count RIU Hotels & Resorts among those who benefitted from the Toronto Blue Jays’ post-season World Series run. The Spanish hotel company opened the Riu Plaza Toronto — its first Canadian property and part of its urban line — in downtown Toronto in September and sales manager Giuliana Candadeno says a number of developments in the city helped lead to its successful debut in this country.

“I think we opened in a really good moment. A lot of things were happening,” she says, citing numerous conventions taking place and the Blue Jays failing to capture the World Series by only one game, with their post-season success generating widespread excitement in this country.

The hotel opened with 252 rooms, and a couple of weeks later raised its room inventory to 352. Initial occupancy has been around 93%, with Candadeno crediting the hotel’s location for its strong start. The hotel also stands to benefit from people wanting to be in Toronto for Christmas and New Year’s.

“I think the location is pretty amazing,” she says. “We’re in the Entertainment district but so close to the Financial District. They (guests) love the location.”

The hotel is welcoming both business and leisure travellers.

Candadeno notes the hotel is within walking distance of such Toronto landmarks as the CN Tower and the Rogers Centre, adding that the Riu Plaza Toronto is a “property for families and corporate travellers and friends close to the attractions of the city.”

Guests “love the decor,” says Candadeno, in, adding that the hotel has what she calls a “contemporary and modern design.”
