What inspired you to pursue a path in travel, tourism, or hospitality?

Exploring, learning about history, cultures, and new places has always interested me, I just didn’t know it could be a career. After high school, I was uncertain about which direction to take, and my mom played a big part in helping me find my way to studying tourism. It turned out to be the perfect fit.

What excites you most about the future of this industry?

What excites me most is that the world is changing significantly, which means the industry is being pushed to recalibrate how it functions and what it prioritizes. I’m thrilled by the opportunity to play a part in such a pivotal moment in an industry that connects the world.

What’s one experience (in either travel, school, or work) that has shaped who you are today?

My internship with the Tourism Industry Association of Ontario (TIAO) was a defining one. It was my first real introduction to working in the industry and gave me invaluable exposure, helped me build new skills and relationships and confirmed I’m on the right path.

How do you hope to make an impact through your career in travel, tourism, or hospitality?

I hope to contribute to and help shape a version of the industry that is more intentional about the experiences it creates. I’m drawn to the idea of developing emerging destinations and unique travel experiences. I want my career to reflect what I believe tourism is at its best: a force that builds communities. If I can play even a small role in making it more accessible, that feels like meaningful work.

Why do you believe travel has the power to change lives or communities?

I believe travel has a unique power to break down barriers, foster empathy, community, and build perspective. These are the traits that drive real, positive change. The more people step outside their own experience, the more the world benefits from it.

What has been your most memorable travel or hospitality experience so far?

One experience I think about quite often is driving with my family through the mountains along the west coast of Türkiye stopping in the small cities, rural villages, stunning beaches, and historic sites along the way. Tasting different dishes, wine and random roadside food, being fully immersed in the culture and history.

What destination is at the top of your travel bucket list right now and why?

While my bucket list is extensive, I would really love to visit Senegal. It’s a place that holds huge historical significance for West Africa and is home to beautifully preserved architecture which is why it’s described as a “Living Museum”. I haven’t travelled much across my own continent yet, and I think Senegal is the perfect destination to start with.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received about travel or your career?

Anthony Bourdain said it best: “Be open to experience. Be willing to try new things. Don’t have a rigid plan. Accept random acts of hospitality without judgment or fear. Don’t be afraid to wander and don’t be afraid to eat a bad meal, because if you don’t risk the bad meal, you’ll never get to the magical one.”

As a Baxter Student Ambassador, what are you most excited to contribute or achieve this year?

This year, I want to be more involved! In my studies, my community, and the industry. I’m looking forward to new experiences and networking with people who share the same verve for tourism.
