What’s the most important thing you learned in school?

Humber Polytechnic has taught me amazing things about the tourism industry, helping me to discover that tourism is a powerful tool to educate others and open their eyes to the huge difference between a tourist and a traveller! I strongly believe that travelling can change our perspective for the better by helping us understand how to be global citizens.

Why did you choose to study travel, tourism or hospitality?

My first contact with the industry was in my home country of Ecuador through my diploma in culinary arts, where I also learned about tourism. That sparked my interest and, after graduating, I wanted to study tourism abroad. I chose Toronto because of its multicultural environment. It was one of the best decisions I’ve made.

What is your greatest professional strength?

My greatest strength is my determination. I always give my best in every task. I push myself to get the results that reflect my true abilities and the best version of me. I take pride in being reliable and passionate about my work. I am a true believer that hard work always pays off.

In your opinion, what’s the most exciting trend in travel, tourism or hospitality right now and why?

Ecotourism is an increasing trend right now. It plays an important role in shaping tourism; the awareness among travellers about their impact is critical in the preservation of destinations. I find this beautiful and necessary to keep our industry sustainable.

What are your goals for the year ahead?

For this year I have a big achievement awaiting! My graduation and the completion of my internship represent big steps full of learning and growth for me. Being able to finally start my new adventure in the tourism industry and make this transition from student to professional is something I have been working hard to achieve.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Ten years is a lot of time, but I see myself working in the industry with my own business, visiting wonderful places and being involved in creating a positive impact on people through cultural immersion during travel. I hope by that time I can help others to travel in meaningful ways and to learn the importance of connections with nature and people around them!

What are some of the top places you want to see in Canada and why?

I would love to explore prehistoric fossils at Dinosaur Provincial Park in Alberta! The Calgary Stampede is on my list too. I’d love to experience the cowboy culture. Prince Edward Island is also a dream because of its beauty and rich culture. These places show Canada’s diversity and nature, which fascinates me.

What do you do to engage in travel, tourism or hospitality mindfully/sustainably?

I try to minimize waste while travelling and support local businesses. I avoid over-touristed spots when possible and seek experiences that give back to the community. I also like to learn about the place I visit before going, in order to show proper respect. I believe tourism should benefit everyone involved.

Name your favourite travel or hospitality experience so far:

My trip to Peru was unforgettable. I took a small group tour with local guides and even swam with turtles in the ocean! I explored beaches, ate delicious food and learned about Peruvian culture. It was also my marriage anniversary trip, which made it even more special.

Name your greatest achievement so far:

Winning the Outstanding ESL Student Award for the course HESL 024 was a huge surprise. I didn’t know about the award or that I was competing, so receiving it was incredibly meaningful. Later I learned it’s a core course for many programs at Humber, which made it even more significant. It showed me that hard work is always rewarded.

What’s the best OR worst piece of travel advice you’ve received?

The best advice came from my regenerative tourism professor Anke Foller: all of us have the power of making an impact inside the industry, but we choose if it is positive or negative. This makes me realize the power we have. She taught us to travel responsibly, appreciate other cultures and support sustainable practices. Her advice helped me realize I wasn’t alone on this path.

What destination is next on your dream travel list and why?

Shanghai, China! I want to experience its futuristic vibe and advanced urban life. I’m curious about its culture, history and modern technology. I think it would be an unforgettable adventure. China is a very ancient culture that I am interested to know better; understanding their past and present is something that sounds fascinating to me.
