What’s the most important thing you learned in school?
The skill of time management and scheduling my time effectively. You must juggle a lot of responsibilities while in school, and while it may seem basic, it is a vital life skill. I am glad my time in school has helped me improve at time management.
Why did you choose to study travel, tourism or hospitality?
I have been passionate about travel from a very young age and have always had a curiosity to see the world. Travel is a huge part of my life and I desire to make that a strong part of my career as well, which is why I decided to come to Niagara College and study tourism in a major Canadian hub for tourism.
What is your greatest professional strength?
I am a very patient person who is able to work well with anyone from any walk of life, which is a valuable skill to have in tourism where you are working in incredibly diverse workplaces both from employee and guest standpoints.
In your opinion, what’s the most exciting trend in travel, tourism or hospitality right now and why?
The rising demand for ecotourism experiences is most exciting to me. There are so many amazing natural wonders in our world that are worth seeing, and I am excited not just by the increased demand for it, but also how sustainability is a crucial part of these experiences. Respecting these wonders we have is of vital importance to our future and is a great thing for tourism in the present and future.
What are your goals for the year ahead?
My primary goal is to gain full-time employment in the travel planning sector as I have obtained my TICO travel counsellor certification. I aim to break into the industry and start on my career path while assisting travellers with their dream vacations.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
In 2035, I aim to be a well-established professional in the travel and tourism industry. I am to be able to create positive change and play a key part in shaping the future of tourism with a strong focus on sustainability and authentic experiences that preserve cultural heritage around the world.
What are some of the top places you want to see in Canada and why?
Newfoundland is a place in Canada I have yet to visit but would love the opportunity to visit soon. There is so much uniqueness about it, from its spring icebergs, wildlife such as puffins and whales as well as the stunning coastal scenery that put it near the top of my must-see in Canada right now.
What do you do to engage in travel, tourism or hospitality mindfully/sustainably?
I make sure to adhere to the seven “leave no trace” principles to the best of my ability when visiting anywhere. I also devote significant research time when I am looking to book with a company. I book with companies with strong sustainability initiatives so that as much of my money as possible goes back into the local communities I am visiting.
Name your favourite travel or hospitality experience so far:
There have been so many to choose from for me, but one that stands out was my three-week trip to Europe the summer before I started at Niagara College. I was able to explore beautiful cities such as Berlin, Prague, Vienna, Venice and many others with some truly lovely people from around the world. It was that experience that made me even more determined to make tourism my professional career path.
Name your greatest achievement so far:
Professionally, I would say graduating from university and then from college. Personally, I would say having visited 35 countries before my 30th birthday. I am proud of both accomplishments, but I do hope to add many more countries to my visited list in the future.
What’s the best OR worst piece of travel advice you’ve received?
“Roll, don’t fold.” Rolling up my clothes instead of folding them has been a real game changer. This piece of advice has saved me a lot on luggage fees by being able to pack lightly and avoid needing heavy baggage. I hardly bring much more than a backpack while travelling now, no matter the length of time.
What destination is next on your dream travel list and why?
There are so many great destinations to choose from, but the top right now for me would be New Zealand. The natural wonders are limitless, and I have always wanted to walk the road to Mordor as seen in Lord of the Rings. It looks like an amazing country to explore that I dream of being able to go to one day.
