What inspired you to pursue a path in travel, tourism, or hospitality?
My first experience in the industry was in 2022, working as a tour operations manager for a culinary tour company, the Underground Donut Tour. That role showed me how seamlessly the field blends my passion for food and culture with storytelling and meaningful connection. Engaging with guests from around the world while sharing Toronto’s history and culinary scene was incredibly rewarding. That experience ultimately inspired me to continue pursuing opportunities in the industry.
What excites you most about the future of this industry?
Immersive cultural experiences are shaping an exciting future for tourism because they let people do more than just observe when they travel – they get to truly connect. Travellers can take part in local traditions, try authentic food, and spend real time with communities. That kind of experience feels more personal than typical sightseeing, and forms a deeper respect for the community and locals.
What’s one experience (in either travel, school, or work) that has shaped who you are today?
During the COVID-19 lockdowns, my partner and I started taking regular walks around our neighbourhood. What began as a simple way to stay active and break up the monotony quickly turned into something more meaningful. I started noticing the small pockets of nature, local businesses, and cultural details in my own city that I had previously overlooked. It gave me a deeper appreciation for my home and reminded me that discovery doesn’t always require travelling far.
How do you hope to make an impact through your career in travel, tourism, or hospitality?
I hope to contribute to positioning Canada as a leading international culinary tourism destination. Toronto’s vibrant food scene was my entry point into the industry, and it continues to inspire my career goals. I aim to collaborate with destination marketing organizations, tour operators, or groups like the Culinary Tourism Alliance to strengthen and promote Canada’s diverse culinary identity. Through this work, I want to help create meaningful, food-driven experiences that connect visitors to local culture.
Why do you believe travel has the power to change lives or communities?
Travel is a powerful way to open your eyes to perspectives and ways of life you might not otherwise encounter. It’s shown me just how much beauty there is in the world to discover. For communities, it can create opportunities, support local businesses, and help preserve culture when approached thoughtfully. At its best, travel leaves both the visitor and the destination better for it.
What has been your most memorable travel or hospitality experience so far?
My most memorable travel experience was taking a tiny plane with my family around Angel Falls in Venezuela. The view was breathtaking, and after landing, we waded through the pink sands of the Canaima Lagoon and had grilled local fish for lunch. This really opened my eyes to the incredible experiences you can expose yourself to through travel.
What destination is at the top of your travel bucket list right now and why?
I have my sights set on visiting Japan, as I’ve long been fascinated by its food, art, and culture. I’m planning to spend several weeks there next spring on my honeymoon, which makes the trip even more meaningful. I’m especially excited to experience Osaka’s renowned street food scene, often called “the nation’s kitchen,” as well as the temples and markets of Kyoto. Exploring Tokyo’s vibrant energy is also high on my list, rounding out what I hope will be an unforgettable journey.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received about travel or your career?
Recently, some advice I have taken to heart is to Just Say Yes to new opportunities. Embracing unfamiliar experiences has helped me build meaningful connections and discover paths I may not have otherwise considered. Even experiences that are outside your comfort zone can teach you something valuable or open unexpected doors. If I hadn’t said yes to applying to BSAP, then I never would have been given this fantastic opportunity!
