Healthy booking patterns show strong traveller confidence in Puerto Vallarta

The director of the Puerto Vallarta Tourism Board says Puerto Vallarta’s tourist trade easily weathered the Feb. 22 flareup of violence and bookings are strong for the summer season.

The director of the Puerto Vallarta Tourism Board says Puerto Vallarta’s tourist trade easily weathered the Feb. 22 flareup of violence that followed the killing of a prominent drug trafficker by security forces and fully expects the Pacific-fronting destination will see large numbers of foreign and domestic visitors alike during the coming summer season.

Luis Villasenor says his destination continues to enjoy a strong following within this country and elsewhere, leading to his confidence about Puerto Vallarta’s tourism trade for the rest of this year.

“Puerto Vallarta continues to perform very positively as we’re seeing strong interest from both international and domestic travellers heading into the summer season,” he says. “There are healthy booking patterns across leisure, luxury, romance, and family travel segments, and the destination continues to benefit from excellent air connectivity, strong repeat visitation, and growing interest in authentic cultural and wellness experiences. Summer is traditionally an important season for national tourism, but we are also continuing to see strong demand from North American travellers looking for beach destinations that combine nature, gastronomy, and culture in one place.

“Canada remains one of Puerto Vallarta’s most important international markets and continues to demonstrate strong loyalty to the destination,” he continues. “We have maintained robust airlift from key Canadian gateways, supported by strong service from major carriers including Air Canada, with Calgary and Edmonton remaining important source markets, alongside broader connectivity from major hubs such as Toronto, Vancouver, and Montréal that continue to support strong year-round and seasonal demand.

“We are also seeing continued momentum in connectivity and demand, supported by expanded air connectivity into Puerto Vallarta from key gateways. This includes new service from Porter Airlines out of Edmonton alongside ongoing Air Canada operations across key Western Canada hubs. These additions continue to strengthen accessibility and reinforce Puerto Vallarta’s position as one of the most in-demand winter sun destinations for Canadian travellers, who continue to respond positively to its hospitality, accessibility, culinary offerings, and overall visitor experience.”

Puerto Vallarta was thrust into an unfavorable international spotlight on Feb. 22 when news reports told of fires being set by people enraged by the drug trafficker’s death. But Villasenor says the violence was quickly quelled and there’s no reason for potential visitors to be uneasy about the thought of a Puerto Vallarta vacation.

“The events in February were very isolated and short-lived, and the destination returned to normal operations extremely quickly,” Villasenor continues. “Since then, Puerto Vallarta has continued welcoming visitors from around the world without interruption, including during major events and peak travel periods. We understand that travellers naturally pay attention to headlines, but the reality on the ground is that Puerto Vallarta remains one of Mexico’s most established and beloved beach destinations, with a strong tourism infrastructure and a long-standing reputation for hospitality and safety. We have also seen strong confidence from travel advisors, tour operators, airlines, and industry partners in the months following those events.”

Tourism authorities are seeing continued investment in Puerto Vallarta and the greater Banderas Bay region with boutique hotels, luxury resorts, and experiential travel offerings, alongside growth in wellness tourism, eco-adventure experiences, and gastronomy. Recently, the region has also seen several notable hospitality developments, including new investment from Marriott Bonvoy across Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit, as well as the opening of the reimagined Westin Playa Vallarta all-inclusive resort. Those additions are seen as reflecting the continued momentum and confidence in the destination from major hospitality brands.

“Beyond accommodations, Puerto Vallarta continues to strengthen its position as a year-round events destination, with a growing calendar that includes the Puerto Vallarta Marathon, UTMB trail running events, and Vallarta Pride, among others,” Villasenor adds. “These sit alongside an expanding range of immersive visitor experiences across wellness, culinary tourism, outdoor adventure, yacht excursions, and cultural programming, all of which continue enhancing the destination’s appeal as a multi-dimensional travel hub.

“What makes Puerto Vallarta unique is the diversity of experiences visitors can have in one destination. You have the Pacific coastline, the Sierra Madre mountains, world-class gastronomy, art and culture, wellness experiences, adventure tourism, and authentic Mexican charm all within close proximity. Puerto Vallarta offers the sophistication and infrastructure of an international destination while still maintaining the character, warmth, and identity of a traditional Mexican town. It is also one of the few destinations where travellers can enjoy luxury experiences alongside authentic local culture so naturally and seamlessly.”

Villasenor says those who wish to step outside Puerto Vallarta’s boundaries during their stay in that city will find plenty of interesting locales to visit.

“One of Puerto Vallarta’s greatest strengths is its location within a broader region full of incredible destinations and experiences,” he states. “We always encourage visitors to explore more of Jalisco (the state Puerto Vallarta is in) and neighboring Nayarit, whether through visits to nearby beach towns, mountain communities, tequila and raicilla experiences, nature excursions, or cultural experiences throughout the region. The connection between Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit in particular creates a very diverse tourism corridor that appeals to many different types of travellers.”

Villasenor praised the annual Gala Puerto Vallarta Riviera Nayarit — held in Puerto Vallarta earlier this year — as a strong tourism showcase for the region, welcoming more than 750 tourism industry professionals from over 10 countries and generated over 5,000 business meetings, surpassing previous years’ records and reinforcing strong confidence in the region among tour operators, airlines, wholesalers, and travel advisors. “It was an important opportunity to strengthen partnerships, showcase new developments, and continue positioning Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit as one of Mexico’s leading tourism regions.”

Meanwhile, Villasenor noted the continued diversity of visitor profiles Puerto Vallarta welcomes throughout the year, “from leisure travellers and families to romance, wellness, luxury, and adventure travellers, as well as repeat visitors who return regularly to experience the destination in different ways and across different seasons. This consistency in visitation reflects the destination’s broad appeal and strong connection with travellers from key international markets.”
