What inspired you to pursue a path in travel, tourism or hospitality?
Travel has been an inspiration and driving force in my life from a young age. I was raised by parents who taught me the value in experience of materialism which has led me to many adventures. While navigating adulthood I found myself drawn more to travel than anything else and I wanted to guide other people towards all the rewarding traits of exploring the world.
What excites you most about the future of this industry?
I am excited to see how this industry continues to evolve and all the global impacts that can arise. Eco-tourism becomes more popular every year. I want to be part of the change to sustainable travel. I am excited to see how people not only change their own lives through travel but the environments of the destinations they visit.
What’s one experience (in either travel, school, or work) that has shaped who you are today?
Conestoga college was generous enough to offer a study abroad program where I could travel to Italy for 10 days and earn a course credit. Through this trip I learned about myself, Italian culture, tourism, and the beauty of Italy. This trip changed how I interacted with peers and widened my perspective on lifestyle choices.
How do you hope to make an impact through your career in travel, tourism, or hospitality?
I hope to help bring eco-tourism to mainstream travel. I know that people could change the world by travelling and I’d like to help travellers realize this. Through careful considerations and research-based decisions, every trip can positively impact the environment, local cultures, and change travellers for the better.
Why do you believe travel has the power to change lives or communities?
Embracing the lifestyle of different people and places often makes one reflect on their own lifestyle. Living amongst people, traditions, and environments, travellers are not accustomed to changing perspectives and open minds. The fundamental ways of a person’s thinking are the most impacted by travel and therefore, the most impactful aspects of a person’s life.
What has been your most memorable travel or hospitality experience so far?
While visiting family in Cozumel Mexico I was fortunate enough to experience life on the island from a local’s perspective. My family and I stayed out of the tourist area and saw the real people who live in Cozumel and had a contrasting experience from most tourists. We got to explore local restaurants and less popular beaches while also loving the heart of the island, the people.
What destination is at the top of your travel bucket list right now and why?
My top destination would be the Polynesian islands. I have always been fascinated by Polynesian culture and would love to experience it firsthand. From food to tradition and the beautiful islands, Polynesia is at the top of my travel bucket list.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received about travel or your career?
Learning under my instructor Cora Roselli I have learned about the fluidity of this industry. Her firsthand accounts of changing roles and companies throughout her career motivate me to explore opportunities. The best advice she has given all of her students is to immerse yourself in what you love because when you do what you love for work, the motivation comes from everything you interact with.
