What inspired you to pursue a path in travel, tourism, or hospitality?
Growing up, tourism and travel were not exactly my first choice. I wanted to be in the medical field just like my family. As the years passed, I realized that I want to explore and experience the world. With tourism, I am able to simultaneously do what I like as well as my job. Growing up in the Philippines, I have seen firsthand how different the lifestyle is in different countries, and working in the tourism industry gives me a chance to see and explore these new escapades awaiting all around the world.
What excites you most about the future of this industry?
Overall, the ever-changing world of tourism excites me. Whether it be new developments in AI technology that can help our travel agents, more sustainable choices when it comes to travelling, and just seeing the world. That’s the beauty of tourism; no experience will be the same twice. We each want to see new things, eat food we never have, meet new people, and share new stories. With tourism, we are able to achieve these things.
What’s one experience (in either travel, school, or work) that has shaped who you are today?
As a Filipino Canadian, I have seen and experienced things in my homeland that I keep craving for while living in Canada. Growing up, I have come to realize that I am privileged. Having proper education, food on our tables, a home to sleep in, and a family to be with in times of trouble. Although, many of my fellow Filipinos, as well as Canadians, do not have the luxury and comfort to be blessed by these things. I want to, one day, be able to help them in some form or shape. But for now, awareness is all I can offer. Because of this, I strive to work harder for them, so I can finally help them, especially in challenging times. To me, this is not just one experience but rather a recurring one. Every day, I am reminded to always fight for what I think is right and to become successful so I may give back to my community; the Philippines and Canada.
How do you hope to make an impact through your career in travel, tourism or hospitality?
I honestly want to ensure that anyone who steps into the industry has the necessary connections that allow their job search to be easier and better. To support each other, especially when we are just starting off. That a career in tourism is not just a fallback but a choice. A choice that one will not regret. In addition to that, I want to inspire people so that they can create the life they want for themselves. That through tourism, we can do our jobs yet keep the adventurous side of our personas.
Why do you believe travel has the power to change lives or communities?
Travel has the power to change our lives and the lives of others as it creates a newer world view and shows the realities that different individuals have. Growing up as a child in the Philippines, I have seen the hardships and difficulties that people faced. Although, in difficult positions, I have noticed that Filipinos have developed the resiliency and perseverance I have not seen in many others. In my travels to Cancun, I have developed a love for their culture as well as their attractions. In my many years in Canada, I have learned to appreciate the beauty of the cold and winter, as well as the kindness my people have to offer. Travel has this kind of power. Our minds can further broaden and see more than what we already have. Newer perspectives, newer cultures, and newer advocacy.
What has been your most memorable travel or hospitality experience so far?
One of the most memorable travel experiences I have had so far was around 8 years ago. During our going away party in the Philippines. We took a road trip to the province my grandparents and parents grew up in. We stayed at a hotel, nothing fancy. But they offered something that I have kept on craving in my many accommodations in other countries. Maybe it is because I was there with my family, but it felt as if I did not want to leave at all. It felt like a dream, a cold breeze at night, the sound of waves crashing, birds singing to you in the morning. This has been one of the reasons as to why I have chosen a career in Tourism, to pursue the life of travel, beauty, and nostalgia. Because not only does tourism offer new experiences, it reminds you of the things you also used to love.
What destination is at the top of your travel bucket list right now and why?
A top spot in my bucket list right now is Spain. I want to experience their beaches, the warmth of the sun, and their social scenes. Their culture is rich and vibrant. Their food is impeccable and has unique cultural perspectives. To add to one of the reasons I want to visit Spain is their architecture, more specifically “La Sagrada Familia” created by Antoni Gaudí. I want to see the church that has been under construction for a hundred years. There is something more than a church to it for me; it carries history and beauty.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received about travel or your career?
Cultivate personal connections while creating new ones. An old professor of mine said that the people we know in an industry can be a huge help in our progression and personal growth. Taking care of relationships and being there for others is important to show how much we care for one another. This is why I want to look after my relationships with people I already know, while creating new connections that help me grow and be a better person. I think that the key to becoming the person you want to be is the people around you. Surrounding yourself with people with similar mindsets and who want you to become successful is necessary on the path to prosperity.
As a Baxter Student Ambassador, what are you most excited to contribute or achieve this year?
As I have mentioned, I want to create connections that allow mutual growth. I want to inspire aspiring tourism students to not be afraid to take the leap into our industry. With the connections I can possibly make, I want their journey to tourism to be easier. I want them to have support and feel welcome. As a Baxter Student Ambassador, I want to help my peers discover their opportunities and personal strengths, whether it be socially or academically. I want to be a catalyst for community and connection. Someone you can approach and feel like you belong to. After all, that’s what I want, for everyone to feel seen and heard.
