Resort says being independent provides greater flexibility
Puerto Vallarta’s Buenaventura Grand Hotel says there are pros and cons to its being an independent property rather than belonging to a chain, but the pros well outweigh the cons.
“Independence gives us flexibility in everything from culinary offerings to holiday programming. It also allows us to preserve a family-driven hospitality culture where long-term staff relationships translate into authentic, attentive service. Guests are not processed through a system; they are welcomed into a place with identity, history, and personality,” says Angelica Garcia, resort sales and marketing director. “Being independent allows us to make decisions locally, based on our guests – not on corporate mandates. We are not required to replicate a standardized brand formula, so we can adapt quickly, personalize service, and design experiences that genuinely reflect Puerto Vallarta.”
Garcia notes that the primary challenge of being independent is that the property doesn’t benefit from the global distribution power or large-scale loyalty programs of major hotel chains.
“Large brands often have stronger name recognition in certain markets,” Garcia adds. “However, we address this through strategic partnerships, strong relationships with tour operators and travel advisors, and by focusing on guest satisfaction and repeat visitation. In our case, the operational agility and personalized experience we can offer outweigh the marketing scale advantages of a chain.”
Over the past three years, the resort has invested approximately US$4.5 million in upgrades focused on guest comfort, culinary excellence, technology, and safety, with Garcia stating, “These are not cosmetic updates but a deliberate reinvestment strategy to ensure guests choose a resort that continuously elevates its standards while delivering authentic hospitality in Puerto Vallarta.”
Garcia also states that the Buenaventura Grand has a trio of, “key differentiators: location, service culture, and balance. First, our beachfront location in the heart of Puerto Vallarta provides immediate access to the Malecón, restaurants, nightlife, and cultural attractions – without long transfers. Guests can experience both resort comfort and the city’s authenticity. Second, our service culture is built on long-standing team members who genuinely care about returning guests. This consistency creates trust and familiarity that is difficult to replicate in larger properties with high staff turnover.”
Third, the hotel is intentionally designed for real families.
“We offer family-friendly amenities alongside adults-only spaces, flexible dining, and holiday programming that feels warm rather than theatrical. The experience is approachable, not overwhelming,” Garcia says.
Amenities at the all-inclusive, oceanfront property include a spa, gym, kids’ club, three restaurants and four bars.
Garcia says Puerto Vallarta itself offers a rare combination of authentic Mexican character, a strong culinary identity, natural beauty, and walkability. “Unlike destinations built primarily as resort corridors, Puerto Vallarta remains a living city with culture, traditions, and community. Visitors can enjoy whale-watching, art galleries, historic neighborhoods, gastronomy, and beachfront relaxation within the same compact destination. The Sierra Madre Mountains meeting the Pacific Ocean create a landscape that is visually distinctive compared to flatter Caribbean destinations.
“It is also one of Mexico’s most established and safest tourism destinations, with excellent air connectivity and a mature hospitality infrastructure. Guests can easily walk from the property to the Malecón in less than eight minutes, making it effortless to experience the vibrant heart of the destination.”
Meanwhile, Garcia states that those staying at her resort will have plenty of opportunities to appreciate Puerto Vallarta.
“Travellers today are looking for connection, not just consumption,” she says. “At Buenaventura Grand, we focus on creating meaningful experiences that feel personal and culturally grounded. Independence is not simply a business structure, it is a philosophy. It allows us to remain close to our guests, close to our team, and close to the spirit of Puerto Vallarta.”
